Idealized Design

An idealized design of a system is that with which its stakeholders would be most satisfied.

There are two constraints:

  • It must be technologically feasible. Science fiction ideas are not allowed.
  • It must be operationally viable, working effectively in the current environment.

An organizational system created should also be self-improving, with feedback that allows learning from both success and failure and consequent redesign.

A useful way to do an idealized design is to imagine that the current organization was destroyed by fire and that you had to redesign it from the ground up.

Creating an idealized design is a useful technique for exploring real customer needs and the potential to use improved technology and methods. It can be used to challenge current ways and give insights that find their way into actual changes.

Idealized design can also be used on products.
