Visual control

Visual control is the principle of increasing efficiency and effectiveness simply by deliberately making things visible. When things are visible, they are kept in conscious mind. It also serves to ensure that everyone has a common viewpoint of what is being displayed.

Tools may be kept visible, for example using a board where they all fit into outlines (which make it visible also when they are missing). Many other parts, materials, controls, etc. of factories and other environments may be kept visible.

The status of ongoing processes may also made visible with overhead LED displays, colored lights or computer displays. Such devices are called Andon boards.

Even posting the latest business fundamentals tables up on a cubicle wall is a form of visual control.
