Design for ... (DFX)DFX (or DFx) is a general term 'Design for ...' that covers a wide range of purposes during design. The original terms are DFA (Assembly) and DFM (Manufacture) and reflect the problem whereby designers think first about appearance and forget the impact of this narrow focus in the time, cost and other problems that are created for others further down the line. DFX works particularly well within a Concurrent Engineering context where, for example, manufacturing and other downstream people are engaged during the design phase. DFX terms include:
