Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
APQP is an approach to quality planning for product development that was
defined by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG). There are five phases as
below:
- Plan and Define Programme: Determine customer needs, requirements
and expectations to set inputs and output quality criteria. This may use
such as QFD.
- Product Design and Development Verification: Review inputs and
methods of producing outputs. This may use methods such as
FMECA.
- Process Design and Development Verification: Review manufacturing
systems and control plans
- Product and Process Validation: Validate manufacturing process
and control mechanisms in trial production run.
- Launch, Feedback, Assessment and Corrective Action: Reduce
variation with continuous improvement.
This includes seven key activities:
- Understanding customer needs
- Proactive feedback and corrective action
- Process design
- Failure mode management
- Verification and validation
- Design reviews
- Control of variation
